VitaNUT - Package Design for Humanitarian Food-Aid

VitaNUT-Pro Branding and Package Design
Working around the restrictions and requirments of processing equipment to develop easily recognizable branding for a new innovative form of humanitarian food-aid.

This has been a very rewarding project.  My task was to work around the excessive restrictions placed on international food-aid and limitations of the manufacturer's processing equipment to create an identity for VitaNUT-Pro, a new innovative form of humanitarian food-aid.

VitaNUT-Pro is a ready-to-eat paste similar to peanut butter, but innovatively manufactured for moderate to severe malnutrition.  It is not sold on a shelf, but is distributed by non-profits and government entities.

Restrictions and limitations of Project:
1. The number of colors I could use per design was greatly limited because each color requires a new plate for printing.  The budget of this project required as few plates as possible.  Since the VitaNUT-Pro logo is a trademarked, I had to have orange and yellow plates.  I was also required to have white and black plates by food-aid restrictions.  I managed with only those four plates on the IC formula, but added a contrasting color for each of the other 2 formulas.
2. The processing equipment used by the manufacturer does not use an eye-spot (used to center the design), so each sachet will look different because the film could be cut anywhere.  (ie. the design had to make sense aestheticallly and contain all of the necessary information no matter where the 7.5" sachet is cut)
3. I was restricted to 2 colors on the box.  The design could bleed along the x-axis, but not along the y-axis.
There are 3 formulations of VitaNUT; General Purpose (GP), Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW) and Infants and Children (IC).  Since the orange and yellow are trademarked I selected the green and blue as a strong contrast, but kept the bright yellow for the childrens sachet.
Preparation Pictographics need to be easy to understand without written explaination for the end-users that cannot read English.
All of the orange and black boxes are pre-printed by a box manufacturer.  We also wanted the flexibily of printing boxes in-house, so I created a similar design using transparencies of black.
